June 1, 2026. The official inauguration for ITALUS - an arché dedicated to regenerating southern Italy’s cultural heritage and territory through its next generation patrimonio.
We celebrated this debut in a truly commemorative way that marked a once in a lifetime moment in history.
For our first public act, we invited The Historic Wallace House - the treasured landmark in the heart of Canada’s largest Italian community, and venue for our evening - to raise the Italian flag.
This was a truly monumental occasion, marking the first time the Italian flag has flown over the estate since the building was built in 1873.
In commemoration, ITALUS founder Daniela Sfara and heritage property Director James Maynard signed an ATTESTAMENTO of recognition for this significant milestone, and this certificate now lives on the wall beside the fireplace portrait of Mr. Wallace.
We were honored to have a special visit by Ontario's Associate Attorney General, and MPP for Vaughan, Onorevole Michael Tibollo, to witness this moment.
And these heritage honoring gestures made reflects the very heart of ITALUS: to champion what is right and just for our heritage while inspiring the next generation to carry forward the legacies entrusted to us through their own skills, passions, and actions.
The evening itself was remarkably significant as we debuted with a living heritage exhibition.
L'Arte Sussurra - Art Whispers.
Curated by the next generation of Italian stewards, artisans, oral historians, storytellers, cultural archivists, and artists - as they carried forward what Italian heritage means to them through art of all forms. Through deeply personal works of art, the exhibition explored identity, ancestry, belonging, memory, and the many ways Southern Italian heritage continues to evolve in contemporary life. Each piece invited visitors into an ongoing conversation between past and present, reminding us that heritage never stands still. It continues to whisper through every generation willing to listen.
The community gathered around a shared purpose. Artists, cultural leaders, heritage advocates, families, and supporters came together to celebrate and became part of the very first chapter of a mission dedicated to ensuring that the traditions, stories, craftsmanship, dialects, rituals, and cultural knowledge of Southern Italy continue to thrive through and for generations to come.
June 1st was an evening of firsts, an evening of history, and the beginning of a publicly accepted responsibility to ensuring that Southern Italy's living heritage continues to be understood, celebrated, protected, and carried forward across generations and around the world.
We thank our artisans, our ITALUS stewards, our incredible sponsors and partners, and our wonderful community who took the time to visit, and be brought into the very beauty they helped create through decades of inspiration, lessons, sacrifice and legacy.
As we lay the foundational stones for what's to come, we would be thrilled to have you woven into these earliest pages and to share in this meaningful adventure from the very beginning with us.
