Yup, that's me at 3 years old.
I was born June 12 1975, and am the youngest of 5.
I won't bore you with the details on how I was the blessed mistake with a gaping 16 years between myself and the eldest to prove it, or how mamma's idea of a fun play date was teaching me to cook and keep a meticulously clean home, but it was in the kitchen at 238 Sterling Rd in Toronto where this photo was taken, that I began to learn and appreciate the romanticism of what Italian food and culture is all about;
the homemade dishes, the slow stirs of sugo and kneading of dough, the handmade pasta on Sundays, the magical way a small space was instantly transformed to welcome 30 or so relatives at the table for copious amounts of food, wine, and more food;
all made by one person, all made from scratch, and all made without reading a single recipe.
If you've ever been to the table of a young at heart Italian, you'll have realized those meals were much more than the enjoyment of food and family... they were EXPERIENCES!
I am eternally grateful and honored to have spent as much in the kitchen with mamma as I have - because that very intuitive cooking I learned from her and every other young at heart local I've learned from throughout my life both here and in Italy that they learned from their parents gifting us with more than 100 years of combined culinary mastery, is the very way I prepare every dish, and it's how I teach others to cook in my
ITALY AT HOME cooking classes series.
My approach is very much to share the same emotional experience that I was fortunate to indulge for over 45 years.
